GATHERING THE COMMUNITY

PRELUDE

The clergy will enter and kneel to pray. At this point, please move to your seats and conclude conversations quietly. The Celebrant then welcomes the gathering informally.

THE GREETING

Celebrant    We acknowledge with respect that we worship on the traditional and unceded     territories of the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh Nations. Let us pray that we may live more deeply into the calls to action from Canada’s Truth and Reconciliation     Commission.
All    May our words and our action reflect our awareness and appreciation of this.

A moment of silence is kept.

HYMN    “Wind Who Makes All Winds That Blow”                                                       CP249

Wind who makes all winds that blow—
gusts that bend the saplings low,
gales that heave the sea in waves,
stirrings in the mind's deep caves—
aim your breath with steady power
on your church, this day, this hour.
Raise, renew the life we've lost,
    Spirit God of Pentecost.

Fire who fuels all fires that burn—
    suns around which planets turn,
    beacons marking reefs and shoals,
shining truth to guide our souls—
    come to us as once you came;
burst in tongues of sacred flame!
Light and Power, Might and Strength,
fill your church, its breadth and length.
    Holy Spirit, Wind and Flame,
    move within our mortal frame.
Make our hearts an altar pyre.
Kindle them with your own fire.
Breathe and blow upon that blaze
till our lives, our deeds, and ways
speak that tongue which every land
    by your grace shall understand.

The Celebrant greets the community.

Celebrant        The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit, be with you all.
All               And also with you.

COLLECT OF THE DAY

Celebrant    Lord God our redeemer, who heard the cry of your people and sent your servant Moses to lead them out of slavery, free us from the tyranny of sin and death, and by the leading of your Spirit bring us to our promised land; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.
All    Amen.

THE LITURGY OF THE WORD

Celebrant        Let us prepare ourselves for the Word of God as it comes to us in the reading of Holy Scriptures.
All    Our hearts and minds are open.

FIRST READING

Reader    A READING FROM THE BOOK OF JOB

Then Job answered the Lord: "I know that you can do all things, and that no purpose of yours can be thwarted. 'Who is this that hides counsel without knowledge?' Therefore I have uttered what I did not understand, things too wonderful for me, which I did not know. 'Hear, and I will speak; I will question you, and you declare to me.' I had heard of you by the hearing of the ear, but now my eye sees you; therefore I despise myself, and repent in dust and ashes." And the Lord restored the fortunes of Job when he had prayed for his friends; and the Lord gave Job twice as much as he had before.

Then there came to him all his brothers and sisters and all who had known him before, and they ate bread with him in his house; they showed him sympathy and comforted him for all the evil that the Lord had brought upon him; and each of them gave him a piece of money and a gold ring. The Lord blessed the latter days of Job more than his beginning; and he had fourteen thousand sheep, six thousand camels, a thousand yoke of oxen, and a thousand donkeys. He also had seven sons and three daughters. He named the first Jemimah, the second Keziah, and the third Keren happuch.

In all the land there were no women so beautiful as Job's daughters; and their father gave them an inheritance along with their brothers. After this Job lived one hundred and forty years, and saw his children, and his children's children, four generations. And Job died, old and full of days.                                                                                   JOB 42:1-6, 10-17

Reader            Hear what the Spirit is saying to God’s people.
All     Thanks be to God.

Musical Interlude

SECOND READING

Reader    A READING FROM THE LETTER TO THE HEBREWS

Furthermore, the former priests were many in number, because they were prevented by death from continuing in office; but he holds his priesthood permanently, because he  continues forever. Consequently he is able for all time to save those who approach God through him, since he always lives to make intercession for them. For it was fitting that we should have such a high priest, holy, blameless, undefiled, separated from sinners, and exalted above the heavens. Unlike the other high priests, he has no need to offer sacrifices day after day, first for his own sins, and then for those of the people; this he did once for all when he offered himself. For the law appoints as high priests those who are subject to weakness, but the word of the oath, which came later than the law, appoints a Son who has been made perfect forever.             HEBREWS 7:23-28

Reader            Hear what the Spirit is saying to God’s people.
All     Thanks be to God.

THE GOSPEL

Reader    The Lord be with you.
All        And also with you.

Reader    +The Holy Gospel of Jesus the Christ according to Mark.
All        Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

They came to Jericho. As Jesus and his disciples and a large crowd were leaving Jericho, Bartimaeus son of Timaeus, a blind beggar, was sitting by the roadside. When he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to shout out and say, "Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!" Many sternly ordered him to be quiet, but he cried out even more loudly, "Son of David, have mercy on me!" Jesus stood still and said, "Call him here." And they called the blind man, saying to him, "Take heart; get up, he is calling you." So throwing off his cloak, he sprang up and came to Jesus. Then Jesus said to him, "What do you want me to do for you?" The blind man said to him, "My teacher, let me see again." Jesus said to him, "Go; your faith has made you well." Immediately he regained his sight and followed him on the way.   MARK 10:46-52

Reader    The Gospel of Christ.
All    Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ

SERMON

AFFIRMING OUR FAITH (The Apostles’ Creed)

Celebrant    Let us give voice to our convictions and substance to our hopes.
All    I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE

CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION

Deacon        Let us confess our forgetfulness of the needs of the poor, and repent of the     ways in which we waste the resources of the world.

Silence is kept.

Deacon       Most merciful God,
All         we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed,  by     what we have done, and by what we have left  undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves.

We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have     mercy on us and forgive us, that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your name. Amen.

Celebrant    Almighty God have mercy upon you, +pardon and deliver you from all your sins,
confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and keep you in eternal life; through Jesus Christ our Lord.
All        Amen.

THE PEACE

The Celebrant may use some appropriate introductory words.

Celebrant    The peace of Christ be always with you.
All        And also with you.

Deacon will informally give directions.

CELEBRATION OF THE EUCHARIST

The deacon prepares the table.

PRAYER OVER THE GIFTS

Celebrant            Let us pray
The community prays in silence.

Celebrant    God of constant love, you have guided your people in all times and ages. May we who offer you our praise today always be ready to follow where you lead; we ask this in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord.
All    Amen.

THE GREAT THANKSGIVING

Celebrant    The Lord be with you.
All    And also with you.

Celebrant    Lift up your hearts.
All    We lift them to the Lord.

Celebrant    Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
All    It is right to give our thanks and praise.

Celebrant    It is indeed right to thank you and praise you, holy and gracious God, creator of all things, ruler of heaven and earth, sustainer of life, for you are the source of all goodness, rich in mercy and abounding in love;you are faithful to your people in every generation, and your word endures for ever.

Therefore with angels and archangels, with the fellowship of saints and the company of  heaven, we glorify your holy name, evermore praising you and saying,

SANCTUS
    Holy, holy, holy, Lord,
    God of power and might,
heaven and earth are full of your glory.
    Hosanna in the highest.
Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
    Hosanna in the highest.

Celebrant     We praise you, merciful Father, not as we ought, but as we are able, because in your tender love you gave the world your only Son, in order that the world might be saved through him. He made you known by taking the form of a servant, healing the sick, liberating the oppressed, reaching out to the lost.Betrayed, reviled, and nailed to the cross, he confronted the power of sin and disarmed it for ever.In his offering of himself, he became the perfect and sufficient sacrifice for the sins of the whole world. Redeemed by Christ, we have been adopted as your children; by your pardon you have made us worthy to praise you.

On the night he was betrayed, Jesus, at supper with his friends, took bread, gave you thanks, broke the bread, gave it to them, and said, “Take and eat: this is my body which is given for you.

Do this for the remembrance of me.” After supper he took the cup of wine, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this all of you: this is my blood of the new covenant which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins.  Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.”

In obedience to him and with grateful hearts we approach your holy table, remembering our Saviour’s sacrifice, and rejoicing in his victory. Confident in his sovereign purpose, we declare our faith.

All     Christ has died, Christ is risen, Christ will come again.

Celebrant     Send your Holy Spirit on us that as we receive this bread and this cup we may partake of the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ, and feed on him in our hearts by faith with thanksgiving. May we be renewed in his risen life, filled with love, and strengthened in our will to serve others; and make of our lives, we pray, a pure and holy sacrifice, acceptable to you, knitting us together as one in your Son Jesus Christ, to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, be all honour and glory, now and forever.

All           Amen.

THE LORD’S PRAYER (said)
Please use the language/version which is most helpful to you.

Celebrant            As our Saviour taught us, let us  pray.
All    Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial, and deliver us from evil.

For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours,  now and forever. Amen.

Precious these waters, endless seas,
deep ocean’s dream,
waters of healing, rivers of rain,
the wash of love again. R

Precious this gift, the air we breathe;
wind born and free
Breath of the Spirit, blow through this place,
our gathering and our grace.

Refrain    Called by earth and sky, promise of hope held high.
This is our sacred living trust, treasure of life sanctified, called by earth and sky.

Precious these mountains, ancient sands;
vast fragile land.
Seeds of our wakening, rooted and strong,
Creation’s faithful song.

Refrain    Called by earth and sky, promise of hope held high.
This is our sacred living trust, treasure of life sanctified, called by earth and sky.

Precious the fire that lights our way,
bright dawning day.
Fire of passion, sorrows undone,
our faith and justice one.

Refrain    Called by earth and sky, promise of hope held high.
This is our sacred living trust, treasure of life sanctified, called by earth and sky.
