PRELUDE

The clergy will enter and kneel to pray. At this point, please move to your seats and conclude conversations quietly. The Celebrant then welcomes the gathering informally.

HYMN    “For the Fruit of All Creation”                                                            CP259

    For the fruit of all creation, thanks be to God;
gifts bestowed on every nation, thanks be to God.
For the ploughing, sowing, reaping, silent growth while we are sleeping,
future needs in earth's safe-keeping, thanks be to God.

In the just reward of labour, God's will is done.
In the help we give our neighbour, God's will is done.
In our worldwide task of caring for the hungry and despairing,
in the harvests we are sharing, God's will is done.

For the harvests of the Spirit, thanks be to God.
For the good we all inherit, thanks be to God.
For the wonders that astound us, for the truths that still confound us,
most of all that love has found us, thanks be to God.

THE GREETING

Celebrant    We acknowledge with respect that we worship on the traditional and unceded     territories of the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh Nations. Let us pray that we maylive more deeply into the calls to action from Canada’s Truth and Reconciliation     Commission.
All    May the living Christ lead us all on the pathways of reconciliation and peace.

A moment of silence is kept. The Celebrant greets the community.

Celebrant        The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit, be with you all.
All               And also with you.

COLLECT OF THE DAY

Celebrant        Almighty and everliving God, increase in us your gift of faith, that forsaking what lies behind and reaching out to what is before, we may run the way of your commandments and win the crown of everlasting joy;through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.
All    Amen.

THE LITURGY OF THE WORD

Celebrant        Let us prepare ourselves for the Word of God as it comes to us in the reading of Holy Scriptures.
All    Our hearts and minds are open.

FIRST READING

Reader    A READING FROM THE BOOK OF JOB

Then the Lord answered Job out of the whirlwind: "Who is this that darkens counsel by words without knowledge? Gird up your loins like a man, I will question you, and you shall declare to me. Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth? Tell me, if you have understanding. Who determined its measurements - surely you know! Or who stretched the line upon it? On what were its bases sunk, or who laid its cornerstone when the morning stars sang together and all the heavenly beings shouted for joy?"

“Can you lift up your voice to the clouds, so that a flood of waters may cover you? Can you send forth lightnings, so that they may go and say to you, 'Here we are'? Who has put wisdom in the inward parts, or given understanding to the mind? Who has the wisdom to number the clouds? Or who can tilt the waterskins of the heavens, when the dust runs  into a mass and the clods cling together? Can you hunt the prey for the lion, or satisfy the appetite of the young lions, when they crouch in their dens, or lie in wait in their covert? Who provides for the raven its prey, when its young ones cry to God, and wander about for lack of food?"  JOB 38:1-7, 34-41

Reader            Hear what the Spirit is saying to God’s people.
All     Thanks be to God.

Musical Interlude

SECOND READING

Reader    A READING FROM THE LETTER TO THE HEBREWS

Every high priest chosen from among mortals is put in charge of things pertaining to God on their behalf, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins. He is able to deal gently with the ignorant and wayward, since he himself is subject to weakness; and because of this he must offer sacrifice for his own sins as well as for those of the people. And one does not presume to take this  honour, but takes it only when called by God, just as Aaron was. So also Christ did not glorify himself in becoming a high priest, but was appointed by the one who said to him, "You are my Son, today I have begotten you"; as he says also in another place, "You are a priest forever, according to the order of Melchizedek."

In the days of his flesh, Jesus offered up prayers and supplications, with loud cries and tears, to the one who was able to save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverent submission. Although he was a Son, he learned obedience through what he suffered; and having been made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him, having been designated by God a high priest according to the order of Mel-chizedek.                                                                                       HEBREWS 5:1-10

Reader      Hear what the Spirit is saying to God’s people.
All     Thanks be to God.

THE GOSPEL

Reader    The Lord be with you.
All        And also with you.

Reader    +The Holy Gospel of Jesus the Christ according to Mark.
All        Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came forward to Jesus and said to him, "Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask of you." And he said to them, "What is it you want me to do for you?" And they said to him, "Grant us to sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your glory." But Jesus said to them, "You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, or be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with?" They replied, "We are able." Then Jesus said to them, "The cup that I drink you will drink; and with the baptism with which I am baptized, you will be baptized; but to sit at my right hand or at my left is not mine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared." When the ten heard this, they began to be angry with James and John. So Jesus called them and said to them, "You know that among the Gentiles those whom they recognize as their rulers lord it over them, and their great ones are tyrants over them. But it is not so among you; but whoever wishes to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wishes to be first among you must be slave of all. For the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life a ransom for many."   MARK 10:35-45

Reader    The Gospel of Christ.
All    Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ

SERMON

AFFIRMING OUR FAITH (The Apostles’ Creed)

Celebrant    Let us give voice to our convictions and substance to our hopes.
All    I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary.He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father.  He will come again to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body,  and the life everlasting. Amen.

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE

CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION

Deacon        Let us confess our forgetfulness of the needs of the poor, and repent of the ways in which we waste the resources of the world.

Silence is kept.

Deacon       Most merciful God,
All         we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word,  and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we  have not loved our neighbours as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us, that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your name. Amen.

Celebrant    Almighty God have mercy upon you, +pardon and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and keep you in eternal life; through Jesus Christ our  Lord.
All        Amen.

THE PEACE

The Celebrant may use some appropriate introductory words.

Celebrant    The peace of Christ be always with you.
All        And also with you.

Deacon will informally give directions.

CELEBRATION OF THE EUCHARIST

The table is prepared.

PRAYER OVER THE GIFTS

Celebrant            Let us pray

The community prays in silence.

Celebrant    Eternal God, your word inspires our faith. May we who offer you our praise trust you in all things. We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ the Lord.
All    Amen.

THE GREAT THANKSGIVING

Celebrant    The Lord be with you.
All    And also with you.

Celebrant    Lift up your hearts.
All    We lift them to the Lord.

Celebrant    Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
All    It is right to give our thanks and praise.

Celebrant    It is indeed right to thank you and praise you, holy and gracious God, creator of all things, ruler of heaven and earth, sustainer of life, for you are the source of all goodness,    rich in mercy and abounding in love; you are faithful to your people in every generation, and your word endures for ever. Therefore with angels and archangels, with the fellowship of saints and the company of heaven, we glorify your holy name, evermore praising you and singing,

SANCTUS
    Holy, holy, holy, Lord,
    God of power and might,
heaven and earth are full of your glory.
    Hosanna in the highest.
Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
    Hosanna in the highest.
    Hosanna in the highest.

Celebrant     We praise you, merciful Father, not as we ought, but as we are able, because in your tender love you gave the world your only Son, in order that the world might be saved through him. He made you known by taking the form of a servant, healing the sick, liberating the oppressed, reaching out to the lost. Betrayed, reviled, and nailed to the cross, he confronted the power of sin and disarmed it for ever.

In his offering of himself, he became the perfect and sufficient sacrifice for the sins of the whole world. Redeemed by Christ, we have been adopted as your children; by your pardon
you have made us worthy to praise you.

On the night he was betrayed, Jesus, at supper with his friends, took bread, gave you thanks, broke the bread, gave it to them, and said, “Take and eat: this is my body which is given for you.  Do this for the remembrance of me.”

After supper he took the cup of wine, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this all of you: this is my blood of the new covenant which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins.

Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.”

In obedience to him and with grateful hearts we approach your holy table, remembering our Saviour’s sacrifice, and rejoicing in his victory.Confident in his sovereign purpose, we declare our faith.

All     Christ has died, Christ is risen, Christ will come again.

Celebrant     Send your Holy Spirit on us that as we receive this bread and this cup we may partake of the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ, and feed on him in our hearts by faith with thanksgiving.

May we be renewed in his risen life, filled with love, and strengthened in our will to serve others; and make of our lives, we pray, a pure and holy sacrifice, acceptable to you, knitting us together as one in your Son Jesus Christ, to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, be all honour and glory, now and forever.
All           Amen.

THE LORD’S PRAYER (said)
Please use the language/version which is most helpful to you.

Celebrant            As our Saviour taught us, let us pray.
All    Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven.

Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us.

Save us from the time of trial, and deliver us from evil.

For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever. Amen.

Celebrant     Be present, be present, Lord Jesus Christ, crucified and risen;
All               make yourself known in the breaking of bread.

THE INVITATION

Celebrant    This is the table, not of the righteous, but of the poor in spirit. It is made ready for those who love God and who want to love God more.

So come, you who have much faith and you who have little, You who have been here often  and you who have not been for a long time or ever before,

You who have tried to follow and all of us who have failed. Come, not because the Church invites you;  It is Christ who invites you to be known and fed here.

The gifts of God for the people of God
All    Thanks be to God.
