Seventh Sunday of Easter May 24, 2020 at 11.00 AM

Before the Service

Welcome to our Online Service. In preparation, you may want to think about posture and your environment at home.  You may find it helpful to light a candle, place or hold a cross…whatever is helpful. Music performed by Dr Greg Caisley.

GATHERING THE COMMUNITY

Prelude

Announcements

The Minister gives the Announcements and welcomes everyone. A Territorial acknowledgement that we worship on the traditional unceded territories of the Musqueam, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh is made.

The Greeting

Minister            Drawn from many backgrounds and experiences,

All                    God gathers us as one body.   Minister            Bringing our whole selves before our Maker, All                    God transforms us more and more into who we were created to be.

Minister            We stand together as people loved by God,

All                    and who are called to love others in ordinary and extraordinary ways.   Minister            My friends in Christ, let us praise and worship God who has called us together.

Let us celebrate God’s majesty, and delight in the wonder of God’s love. Together we shall confess our sins and receive assurance that we are forgiven. As the scriptures are read, we can allow God’s word to speak to us, and ponder its meaning for our lives.

In our prayers, we give thanks for God’s goodness, we pray for others as well as for ourselves, and we offer our lives anew in Christ’s service. All this we do, because we believe in the presence among us of our Saviour Jesus Christ, and in the mighty power of the Holy Spirit.

Minister            Dear friends in Christ, as we turn our hearts and minds to worship almighty God, let us confess our sins.

All                   Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us, that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your name. Amen.

Minister            Almighty God have mercy upon you, pardon and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and keep you in eternal life; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

All                   Amen.

THE COLLECT OF THE DAY

Minister            Almighty God, your ascended Son has sent us into the world to preach the good news of your kingdom: inspire us with your Spirit and fill our hearts with the fire of your love that all who hear your Word  may be drawn to you, And that your Kingdom may come on earth as in heaven through Jesus Christ our Lord. All                    Amen

THE PROCLAMATION OF THE WORD

A READING FROM THE BOOK OF ACTS

So when they had come together, the apostles asked Jesus, "Lord, is this the time when you will restore the kingdom to Israel?" He replied, "It is not for you to know the times or periods that the Father has set by his own authority. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth." When he had said this, as they were watching, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight. While he was going and they were gazing up toward heaven, suddenly two men in white robes stood by them. They said, "Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking up toward heaven? This Jesus, who has been taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven." Then they returned to Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is near Jerusalem, a sabbath day's journey away. When they had entered the city, they went to the room upstairs where they were staying, Peter, and John, and James, and Andrew, Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew, James son of Alphaeus, and Simon the Zealot, and Judas son of James. All these were constantly devoting themselves to prayer, together with certain women, including Mary the mother of Jesus, as well as his brothers. ACTS 1:6-14 ACTS 1:6-14

Minister            This is the Word of the Lord.

All                    Thanks be to God.

THE GOSPEL

Reader             +The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John.

All                    Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

After Jesus had spoken these words, he looked up to heaven and said, "Father, the hour has come; glorify your Son so that the Son may glorify you, since you have given him authority over all people, to give eternal life to all whom you have given him. And this is eternal life, that they may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent. I glorified you on earth by finishing the work that you gave me to do. So now, Father, glorify me in your own presence with the glory that I had in your presence before the world existed. I have made your name known to those whom you gave me from the world. They were yours, and you gave them to me, and they have kept your word. Now they know that everything you have given me is from you; for the words that you gave to me I have given to them, and they have received them and know in truth that I came from you; and they have believed that you sent me. I am asking on their behalf; I am not asking on behalf of the world, but on behalf of those whom you gave me, because they are yours. All mine are yours, and yours are mine; and I have been glorified in them. And now I am no longer in the world, but they are in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, protect them in your name that you have given me, so that they may be one, as we are one."  JOHN 17:1-11

Reader             The Gospel of Christ.

All                    Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

HOMILY

After the Homily there will be a period of time for reflection.

AFFIRMATION OF FAITH

Minister            Let us confess our faith as we say,

All                   I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.   I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary.   He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead.   I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
