AN OUTLINE ORDER FOR MORNING PRAYER DURING HOLY WEEK

A SONG OF LAMENTATION
1 Is it nothing to you, all you who pass by? *
Look and see if there is any sorrow like my sorrow,

2 Which was brought upon me, *
which the Lord inflicted on the day of his fierce anger.

3 For these things I weep; my eyes flow with tears; *
for a comforter is far from me, one to revive my courage.

4 Remember my affliction and my bitterness, *
the wormwood and the gall!

5 But this I call to mind, *
and therefore I have hope:

6 The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases, *
his mercies never come to an end;

7 They are new every morning; *
great is your faithfulness.

8 ‘The Lord is my portion,’ says my soul, *
‘therefore I will hope in him.’

9 The Lord is good to those who wait for him, *
to the soul that seeks him.

10 It is good that we should wait quietly *
for the salvation of the Lord.

11 For the Lord will not reject for ever; *
though he causes grief, he will have compassion,

12 According to the abundance of his steadfast love; *
for he does not willingly afflict or grieve anyone.

Lamentations 1.12, 16a,b; 3.19, 21-26, 31-33

All   Glory to God, Source of all being, eternal Word and Holy Spirit: as it was in the beginning, is now and will be for ever. Amen.

OPENING RESPONSES

Drawn from many backgrounds and experiences,
God gathers us as one body.

Bringing our whole selves before our Maker,
God transforms us more and more into who we were created to be.

We stand together as people loved by God,
and who are called to love others in ordinary and extraordinary ways.

Come, let us worship together.

O Lord, open our lips
and our mouth shall proclaim your praise.

Let your ways be known upon earth,
your saving help among the nations.

Blessed are you, God of our salvation,
to you be praise and glory for ever.
Full of sorrows and acquainted with grief,
Christ was lifted up
so that he might draw the whole world to himself.
May we walk this day in the way of the cross
and always be ready to share its weight,
declaring your love for all the world.

THE PROCLAMATION OF THE WORD

The Psalm of the Day is said. At the end of the Psalm, the following may be said.

Glory to God, Source of all being, eternal Word and Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning, is now and will be for ever. Amen.

An appointed Reading from the Scriptures is read. After a period of silent reflection the following is said.

Hear what the Spirit is saying to the church.
Thanks be to God.

THE RESPONSORY

We adore you, O Christ, and we bless you;
by your holy cross, you have redeemed the world.

God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong.
We adore you, O Christ, and we bless you.

We preach Christ crucified, the power of God and the wisdom of God.
By your holy cross, you have redeemed the world.

God forbid that we should glory,
save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ.

The Canticle - The Song of Salvation

All    The word of the cross is folly to those who are perishing, but to those who are being saved it is the power of God.

1 Jesus, Saviour of the world,
come to us in your mercy: •
we look to you to save and help us.

2 By your cross and your life laid down,
you set your people free: •
we look to you to save and help us.

3 When they were ready to perish, you saved your disciples: •
we look to you to come to our help.

4 In the greatness of your mercy, loose us from our chains, •
forgive the sins of all your people.

5 Make yourself known as our Saviour and mighty deliverer; •
save and help us that we may praise you.

6 Come now and dwell with us, Lord Christ Jesus: •
hear our prayer and be with us always.

7 And when you come in your glory: •
make us to be one with you and to share the life of your kingdom.

All    The word of the cross is folly to those who are perishing,
but to those who are being saved it is the power of God.

All   Glory to God, Source of all being, eternal Word and Holy Spirit: as it was in the beginning, is now and will be for ever. Amen.

AFFIRMATION OF FAITH

Al  l Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength. This is the first and the great commandment.

The second is like it: Love your neighbour as yourself. There is no commandment greater than these.

THE PRAYERS OF THE COMMUNITY

Intercessions are offered

God of suffering and glory, in Jesus Christ you reveal the way of life through the path of obedience. Inscribe your law in our hearts, so that in life we may not stray from you but may be your people.

Amen.

THE LORD’S PRAYER

Standing at the foot of the cross and gathering our prayers and praises into one,

let us pray as our Saviour taught us,
All    Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial, and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and for ever. Amen.

THE CONCLUSION

May Christ, who bore our sins on the cross,
set us free to serve him with joy.
All     Amen.

Let us bless the Lord.
All    Thanks be to God.
